Romance notável, entre outros aspetos, pelo modo como recupera a memória histórica do reinado de D. João V, o Magnânimo, Memorial do convento entretece dados colhidos nas fontes históricas oficiais, nos registos oficiosos e na capacidade imaginativa do autor. O resultado traduz-se na composição de uma tessitura narrativa de forte pendor ideológico em que se substitui o que foi pelo que poderia ter sido, dessa forma propondo uma nova verdade histórica que visa resgatar os heróis anónimos do passado nacional português.

Memorial do convento is a truly remarkable novel, amongst other reasons because of the way it brings back the historical memory of King João V’s (called the Magnanimous) reign. By bringing together data found in official historical sources, in non-official records, as well as in the author’s own imagination, the narrative acquires a strongly ideological dimension, in which what really happened is replaced by what could have happened, thus suggesting a new historical truth that tries to rescue the anonymous heroes of the Portuguese History.
