A remissão do Diabo: de vilão a mocinho em O evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo

Este trabalho contempla o estudo acerca do personagem “Diabo” na obra do escritor português, José Saramago, O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo (1991). A obra em questão rompe com os paradigmas religiosos presentes no Antigo e no Novo Testamento da Bíblia, ao narrar a vida do filho de Deus, como filho também do Diabo de uma maneira diferente daquela contada nos textos bíblicos. Na obra de Saramago, a construção do diabo foge do conceito proveniente do imaginário cristão de Anjo Caído, uma vez que ele é descrito como um indivíduo cujos atributos e características despertam nos personagens e no leitor sentimentos de empatia, mesmo sem conhecer a sua verdadeira personalidade. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é compreender e analisar as maneiras com que esse personagem aparece na obra e como o romancista o constrói a partir do conceito proveniente do imaginário Cristão.  Para que esta pesquisa fosse possível foram feitos estudos bibliográficos amparados principalmente nos autores João Marques Lopes (2010), Antonio Lopes (1995), Salma Ferraz (2012), Alberto Cousté (1997), Carlos Roberto F. Nogueira (2000), entre outros. Após essas leituras foi possível destacar na obra excertos que comprovam a diferença entre o Diabo presente nos Testamentos bíblicos e o Diabo criado por Saramago, salientando assim os momentos que este fato fica mais evidente no romance.

This work has to do with a study about the character “Devil” in the novel O Evangelho Segundo Jesus Cristo (1991), written by the Portuguese author José Saramago.  Saramago’s novel seems to break the religious paradigms presented in the Old and the New Testament of the Bible, by describing  the son of God’s life and the Devil’s life differently from what is reported in the Biblical texts.. In the novel the Devil flees from the Christian imaginary concept of the Fallen Angel and is portrayed as an individual whose attributes and characteristics arouse in the other characters and in the readers feelings of empathy without even knowing his true personality. Thus, taking such fact into consideration, this work aims at understand and analyze the ways in which this character appears in the novel and how the novelist builds him from the Christian imaginary concept. The theoretical framework of this research is based on the works of João Marques Lopes (2010), Antonio Candido (1995), Salma Ferraz (2012), Alberto Cousté (1997), Carlos Roberto F. Nogueira (2000), among others. After these readings it was possible to highlight the book excerpts that show the difference between the Devil presented the biblical Testaments and the Devil created by Saramago, therefore, focusing on the moments that this fact is more evident in the novel.
