O humanismo no cão das lágrimas do romance Ensaio sobre a cegueira, de José Saramago

O romance Ensaio sobre a Cegueira, de José Saramago, contém uma linguagem marcante e a utilização da parábola da perda de sentido, na qual se desenvolve a história de uma cidade subitamente tomada por uma estranha epidemia que deixa todos cegos. Dessa situação surge a violência e a incapacidade das autoridades em controlar a instigante fúria de todos. A visão acaba sendo um sentido que equilibrava a frágil civilidade dos homens. A cegueira e a visão, essas são as duas faces da mesma moeda e que podem ser confrontadas, naquilo que Michale Stolleis chama de a “estranha metáfora antropomórfica” dos olhos que tudo veem e nunca dormem (Das Auge des Gesetzes, München, 2004), gerando uma promessa de onipresença da ordem, representada pela lei, cujo lema ficou marcado com essa máxima: ubique in spiciendum (tudo é para ser visto). Esses fatores estão carregados de uma herança mitológica da figura da divina soberba da deusa da justiça, e tais elementos não são suficientes para se instaurar a efetiva civilidade nas relações, ao contrário, toda a brutalidade se mostra presente, com a perda do sentido da visão, até que surge um cachorro – o cão das lágrimas – a nos mostrar o verdadeiro senso de humanidade.

The novel Blindness, by José Saramago, in a remarkable language and using a parable of loss of sense, in which the story of a city suddenly taken by a strange epidemic that leaves everyone blind is developed. From this situation arises the violence and the inability of the authorities to control the instigating fury of all. Vision ends up being a sense that balances the fragile civility of men. Blindness and vision, these are two sides of the same coin that can be confronted, in what Michale Stolleis calls the “strange anthropomorphic metaphor” of the eyes that see everything and never sleep (Das Auge des Gesetzes, München, 2004), generating a promise of omnipresence of the order, represented by the law, whose motto was marked by this maxim: ubique in spiciendum (everything is to be seen). These all factors are loaded with a mythological heritage of the figure of the divine pride of the goddess of justice, and such elements are not enough to establish effective civility in relationships, on the contrary, all the brutality is present, with the loss of the sense of vision, until a dog appears – the dog of tears – to show us the true sense of humanity.
