Ensaio sobre a cegueira. Silêncios

Este artigo empreende uma reflexão acerca de ocorrências de silêncio, de suas possibilidades de sentido e de como elas se manifestam no texto artístico-literário de Ensaio sobre a cegueira, de José Saramago. Passíveis de investigação estética, as construções de silêncio abundam no texto. São grandes espaços abertos nos quais palavras e silêncios se entrelaçam no jogo da significação. Na dialética entre o dizível e o indizível, as experiências das personagens – relacionadas à “cegueira branca” – apresentam-se conflituosas. Medo, vergonha, tristeza, desespero e angústia são sentimentos com os quais elas têm de lidar. O aporte teórico é constituído principalmente pelas pressuposições relacionadas ao silêncio de Santiago Kovadloff (2003), David Le Breton (1999), George Steiner (1988) e Eni Orlandi (2007). Busca-se realizar uma leitura crítico-interpretativa do romance, contemplando algumas nuanças de silêncio e seus possíveis sentidos. Aspira-se a contribuir com o debate acerca das formas de silêncio abarcadas pela literatura.

The present essay undertakes a reflection about occurrences of silence, of their meaning possibilities and how they manifest themselves in the artistic-literary text Blindness, by José Saramago. Susceptible of aesthetical investigation, the constructions of silence abound in the text. Great spaces are opened in which words and silences intermingle themselves on the signification game. On the dialectic between the speakable and unspeakable, the characters experiences – related to the “white blindness” – are conflicting. Fear, shame, sadness, despair and anguish are feelings with which the characters have to deal. The theoretical support is constituted principally by the assumptions related to the silence of Santiago Kovadloff (2003), David Le Breton (1999), George Steiner (1988) and Eni Orlandi (2007). This study seeks to perform a critical-interpretative reading of the novel, contemplating some nuances of silence and its possible meanings. This study aims to contribute to the debate about the forms of silence covered by literature.
